Planning and Preparation
Begin with your windows and entry points: Do you have protection for your windows, doors? If not, begin this project today! If you already have storm shutters, then make sure they fit correctly and that you have all parts for mounting ready and available.
Have a full-scale practice run: Do you know if your plan is going to work without a problem? Have you forgotten something important in your planning and preparations? Review this today! (Note: If you still have old supplies from last year, you may want to replace them with new ones.
For instance batteries and other items left over. Don't assume they are good without checking. Some folks also have Coleman Propane canisters for small camping Stoves, that have been stored away for several years. (Check expiration on those canisters also, and if expired replace with them with new canisters.)
Have a back-up plan: Do you have a back-up plan in case your first plan fails? Think of this today!
A determination of your evacuation status: Do you live in an evacuation zone? Find out this information today by calling your local emergency management office or via the Internet.
A decision on where you are going to ride out the storm: Will you be staying at home, or at a friend's house with storm protection? Will you be going to a local storm shelter? Make these decisions today, it could mean a matter of life or death!
Determine where you are going to park your vehicles: Do you have a place to park your vehicle safely during the destructive winds of a hurricane? Determine this today and don't wait for the last moment!
Determine where you are going to leave your pets: Do you have a safe strong shelter to keep your pets if needed? If not make those arrangements today while there is still time and room! Tag your pet’s with an under the skin electronic Identification, ask your Vet or Humane Society about this. You can also have a tag made for the collar with Name, Address, and Phone number.
Determine what you are going to do with your boat: Do you have reservations in a dry dock or safe harbor? Do this today, and don't wait any longer, you will need to make these arrangement early so you won't be caught unprepared!
Does your home meet the new building codes for wind resistance? Find out today what you need to upgrade if required. Call your local Building Code Office or Emergency Management Office for help.
Have you reviewed your home insurance storm coverage? If not do so today, and ask your agent any questions you may have on your coverage.
Take pictures of your home inside and outside: This is important so you can document your home's condition, and contents prior to the storms arrival. It's an asset for insurance claims.
Shop for non-perishable foods, and water: Make sure to stock up on can goods, and non-perishable food items that are ready for immediate eating. Oh! and Don't forget a good manual can opener.
