During the Hurricane
  Session: 8

During the Storm: When the storm begins to affect your area move yourself and your family to the safe room you prepared in your home.  (Safe Zone) are tornado proof rooms made of heavy bullet proof steel panels that can be retrofitted into your home.  This is the same as a vault and can be used as such.  For those of you who live in evacuation zones and are forced to leave the confort of your home, you can store valuables in this safe room and lock it till the storm is over.  During Andrew walls and roofs were caving in on top of people but with Safe Zone you will not need to worry about your safety.

DO NOT leave your safe room even if you hear windows breaking or other loud noises.  It is extremely dangerous to expose yourself to the wind stream.  Stay away from windows and doors at all times.

When and if the electricity goes off, use ONLY flashlights or battery operated lanterns.  NEVER use candles or kerosene lamps during the storm.

NEVER cook during the storm.  A gust of wind could spread a fire, and the fire department would not be able to respond.

Have tools, duct tape, rope, wood, nails, plastic tarp and a fire extinguisher ready for emergency repair or in case of a fire.

Important: If the eye of the hurricane passes through your area STAY indoors unless an emergency repair is necessary.  Wind and rain may stop for a few minutes to more than half an hour. DON'T let that fool you.  The wind will suddenly pick up again from the opposite direction and possibly with greater force than before.

Turn off and unplug any unnecessary electrical equipment, especially sensitive electronic equipment, BEFORE the power goes out.  When and if the power goes out, turnoff circuit breakers or remove fuses.  You might want on one circuit breaker that operates a lamp, so you'll know when the power is restored.

Remember Safety always comes first.  So be Safe and Storm wise.
